The Pantanal Complex, or simply Pantanal, is a biome mainly composed of a flooded savanna, covering 250,000 square kilometers and with an average altitude of 100 meters. Due to the difficulties in measuring the size of the Pantanal, references to its area can be found as 210,000 square kilometers.
It is located in the southern part of the state of Mato Grosso, occupying 35% of its territory, and in the northwest of Mato Grosso do Sul, occupying 65%, as well as parts of northern Paraguay and eastern Bolivia (where it is called the Bolivian Chaco). The Pantanal is considered the largest continuous flooded plain in the world, with 140,000 square kilometers in Brazilian territory. According to the SOS Pantanal Institute, out of the total of 195,000 square kilometers considered as part of the Pantanal, 151,000 square kilometers are in Brazil, and the remaining 44,000 square kilometers are divided between Bolivia and Paraguay. The Bolivian Pantanal covers 31,898 square kilometers.
