Curiosities
Hang gliding has its roots in the 1890s when Otto Lilienthal, a German aviation pioneer, conducted experiments with hang gliders. Paragliding, on the other hand, has more recent origins, with its development in the 1950s and 1960s.
While both are forms of free-flying, hang gliding and paragliding differ in terms of design and technique. Hang gliders have a rigid V-shaped frame, while paragliders have a flexible wing. Paragliders are more portable and easier to transport.
Hang glider and paraglider pilots often use a technique called “thermalling” to gain altitude in rising thermal air currents. This allows them to stay in the air longer and reach higher altitudes.
Hang glider and paraglider pilots compete in long-distance races, often covering hundreds of kilometers in a single day. The world distance record for hang gliding is over 700 km, while the paragliding record exceeds 500 km.
Paragliding is generally considered more accessible than hang gliding. It’s easier to learn, requires less training, and is quicker to prepare for flight. As a result, paragliding is a popular choice for beginners in free-flying.
