Curiosities (The Maracanã Stadium)
The Maracanã Stadium became famous worldwide for hosting the final of the 1950 FIFA World Cup, in which Brazil faced Uruguay. The match, known as the “Maracanazo,” is remembered as one of the biggest surprises in World Cup history, with Uruguay’s victory of 2-1.
On July 16, 1950, during the aforementioned World Cup final, Maracanã set the all-time attendance record for a football match. Approximately 199,854 spectators packed the stadium.
Maracanã underwent significant renovations to host the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games. The capacity was reduced, and modernizations were carried out to make the stadium safer and more comfortable.
The stadium was officially named “Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho” in honor of the journalist Mário Filho, who played a key role in the construction of Maracanã. However, it is better known by the name Maracanã, which refers to the neighborhood where it is located.
In addition to football, Maracanã has been the venue for various sports and cultural events, including concerts by famous artists, athletics competitions, religious events, and even the closing ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games.
